What are the differences between galvanized pipes and black pipes?

2025-12-23

Galvanized pipe and Black Pipeare two very common types of Steel Pipe. Their core difference lies in the surface treatment process and the resulting performance differences. Simply put, black pipe is the basic type, while galvanized pipe is an upgraded version of black pipe with improved rust prevention.

1. Appearance

Black Pipe: Uniformly black or dark gray throughout, with an oxide scale on the surface and a rougher feel.

Galvanized Pipe: Typically silvery-white, with a unique pattern formed by zinc crystals ("zinc flowers") on the surface. Aged or thicker coated pipes may appear dark gray. The surface is smoother and flatter than black pipe.

2. Applications

Black Pipe:Used in dry environments for Steel Structures (such asscaffolding and factory trusses, but now mostly replaced by galvanized pipe).

Buried as conduit in concrete or walls (completely enclosed environment, not in contact with air).

Transporting non-corrosive gases and oils, or as structural piping.

Strictly prohibited for exposed water and gas pipelines.

Galvanized Pipe:Traditionally widely used for water and gas pipelines in buildings (now mostly replaced by PPR and other plastic pipes for residential water supply, but still commonly usein fire sprinkler systems).

Exposed outdoor railings, scaffolding, greenhouse frames, etc.

Exposed conduit for wiring in power and communication engineering (surface mounting).

Mechanical structural components requiring rust prevention.
